Description :
The Abeke House is located in Omori-cho at the foot of the Iwami Ginzan, which once boasted the highest silver production in Japan. It is a place where the remnants of the Edo period, which prospered as a silver mine and reached cultural maturity, are alive here and there. At first glance, this small town, which seems to have been left behind by the times, still has the spirit of enjoying living in harmony with nature, which modern Japan has lost sight of. The Abeke House is a samurai residence of the Abe family, a local official built in 1789. It took 13 years to restore this 230 year old samurai house. Today it functions as the Takyo Abeke guesthouse.

A member of Relais & Chateaux. It is said that the great teacher of Japanese Buddhism, Kobo Daishi, bathed every morning in the river Katsura and emerged purified. A few minutes from this river, the hotel Asaba submerges you in the Japan of legends: traditional “Noh” theatre performed by the riverside. After a game of golf in picturesque surroundings, leave your kimono behind and enjoy the pleasures of an open-air bath filled with spring water. The restaurant serves traditional dishes with delightful combinations of sweet and savoury flavours. In the lounge, relax in a chair designed by famous Italian-American Harry Bertoia and in the garden, be inspired by the sweet fragrances of nature. Only 16 rooms.

Description :
The Chiiori Mountain Lodge is a project of the Chiiori Alliance, affiliated with noted author and Japanologist Alex Kerr. This is the first farmhouse renovated by, and is the headquarters of, the Alliance.

The house dates from the Gengoku Period (1699-1720). The house is typical of old Iya construction: with wooden floors (as opposed to tatami mats), irori 囲炉裏 (floor hearths), and massive beams and rafters - all smoked black from centuries of fires burning in the floor hearths. The house took the name Chiiori 篪庵, which means "House of the Flute."

Mino City is famous for its well preserved old houses with Udatsu. An “Udatsu” was originally a firewall built at both ends of a roof.

We collaborated with Ritsuko Hashimoto, who produced the famous Japanese style hotel “Oyado nihon no ashitaba” in Yufuin, to reproduce this traditional Japanese Residence which has 150 years of history.
Baison was established as the fusion of Asian and European beauty to make you feel nostalgic and modern comfort at the same time. The ryokan has only 5 rooms.

While staying at Udatsu-lined old streets, you will hear insects chirping and the murmuring stream. The change of the seasons with different sunlight, wind and moon light will entertain you.

Description :
Hōshi is a ryokan (Japanese traditional inn) in the Awazu Onsen area of Komatsu, in Ishikawa Prefecture. Founded in 718, it was once thought to be the oldest operating hotel in the world until the realization that another Japanese hotel, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, in Yamanashi Prefecture, had claim to this title; it was founded in 705. The ryokan, which is about 1300 years old, has been owned and managed by the Hoshi family for forty-six generations.

Awazu Onsen is said to have been founded over 1300 years ago by the great monk Taicho Daishi under the command of the mountain deity Hakusan Daigongen. These hot springs were a gift from the Hakusan mountain gods to relieve and cure the injuries and illnesses of humans. In the past, many people traveled here to have their infirmities treated with these holy waters blessed by the gods that live around Awazu. Houshi had a humble beginning as a sanitarium lodge, but the 1st generation owner Zengoro believed that Houshi should become a proper hot spring inn to soothe both the body and mind. In modern times, few people use hot springs as treatment for injuries and illness, but the beneficial effects are still significant and real.

Houshi has been loved by many generations, and continues to maintain precious tradition in modern times. Houshi is proud to bear witness to centuries of history and tradition, and was recognized as one of the oldest operating hot spring hotels in the world, officially verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Spending a night at Houshi is certain to remind you of the elegance of old Japan. Guests can experience the depth of the ancient and beautiful Japanese landscape in an authentic setting that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else.

The story is that the inn was founded around 1790 by descendants of the survivors of the Heike clan who lost a war against the Genji at the end of the 12th century. They wanted to be hidden in a secluded area, and accomplished it beautifully. The modern iteration has only 15 rooms and normally requires reservations ten months in advance! It is the only ryokan in the "Yoshigaura Onsen" area. Only dinner and breakfast are served.

Description :
Capsule hotel conveniently located near Kintetsu train station in Nara. Unique design feature is that the hotel interiors are made from local hinoki cypress wood. In addition to individual "rooms" this hotel has one floor for men only, and one for women only. It also has several more regular rooms for couples and families, as well as several bunk-style rooms for up to 4 people. There is a roof-top beer garden and a modest restaurant.

The hotel interiors are lavishly built using hinoki cypress wood from Yoshino, Nara. Hinoki cypress wood also has bug-repellant and antiseptic properties and is long-lasting and durable. It is a very human-friendly material and has been used in Japanese architecture since antiquity. Nara in particular has many buildings made of Hinoki cypress wood. Hinoki is the secret to how the world’s oldest wooden building, the Five-Storied Pagoda, has remained standing for over 1300 years.

Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is a hot spring hotel in Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture. Founded in 705 AD by Fujiwara Mahito, it is the oldest hotel and perhaps the oldest company in operation. In 2011, the hotel was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest hotel in the world.

The Keiunkan lies at the foot of the Akaishi Mountains. It has been continuously operated by 52 generations of the same family (including adopted heirs) for over 1,300 years. The onsen was created by Fujiwara Mahito, son of an aide to the 38th Emperor of Japan, Emperor Tenji. Upon its creation, the healing waters of the springs became widely popular in Japan. Tokugawa Ieyasu was among the onsen's historic guests.

The hotel underwent a major renovation in 1997 but preserved the traditional architectural style of the original onsen. In 2005, private, free-flowing hot spring baths were added to every room.

The hotel has 37 rooms, a restaurant (kaiseki), and a moon-viewing platform. All rooms and facilities of the hotel have free wifi. Tatami mats and classic art furnish the rooms. The staff wears nibu-shiki kimonos. The hotel features public and private hot spring baths.

Description :
The Sojiji Temple was founded about seven hundred years ago in 1321 by Zen Master Keizan Jokin. In the summer of 1322, the Japanese Emperor Godaigo issued an imperial edict to bestow upon Sojiji the honor of “Chokuganjo” (a temple built at the wishes of the Emperor). From then on, the temple became increasingly prosperous, growing to more than 16,000 subordinate temples all over Japan. Most of the temple buildings however, were unfortunately destroyed by a fire on April 13th 1898. On that occasion the temple was transferred to Tsurumi, Yokohama City. New buildings were then constructed one after another in the fire-ravaged area to revive the temple as a “Sobyo” (ancestral mausoleum). Sojiji Soin (Sojiji ancestor temple) still attracts many visitors and trainee monks today.

The temple also is a "shukubo", permitting "temple stays" with prior reservations. Travelers and/or pilgrims have an excellent chance to experience the simple, austere lifestyle of Buddhist monks, while staying at a functioning Zen temple. In addition, visitors are invited to watch or participate in activities such as morning prayers or meditation.

Guests are provided with simple, traditional Japanese-style rooms featuring tatami mat floors and sliding doors (fusuma). Bedding is provided in the form of futon, which are spread out on the tatami floor during the night. Gas heaters are provided for warmth in winter. One of the highlights of staying at Sojiji Soin are the vegetarian meals (shojin ryori), which developed around the Buddhist moral precepts that prohibit taking the lives of other creatures. As such, shojin ryori abstains from using meat or fish and substitutes it with protein-rich plant products such as tofu and konyaku (devils tongue jelly).

Description :
As part of Eastern culture researcher Alex Kerrs’ machiya restoration project, the Tsumesyo Mikuni Machiya was built from an old town pharmacy. In a well-executed attempt to keep its history alive, the inn is decorated with the original wooden sign boards of the medicine store, the cabinets that they used and some beautiful old lacquer ware and pottery. The inn is able to accommodate 2 groups at a time. Divided by a wall, the two separate homes are called Koun meaning running clouds and Ryusui meaning flowing water. Each of them are well equipped with everything you would need to spend a relaxing evening in a townhouse. A furnished kitchen with coffee beans and a grinder to go with them and a tea set for those who don’t crave the early morning caffeine hit. A luxurious bath tub to wind down at night and a spacious sitting room. Each house also has its own little garden space to enjoy some of that fresh air the city always seems to have.

Description :
This deluxe hotel was renovated from the kominka (a traditional Japanese farmhouse) of a wealthy farming household built a few hundred years ago.

Standing on top of a hill looking over beautiful terraced rice fields, it is surrounded by stone walls as though in a citadel. Huge wooden columns and beams were assembled without nails. A shiny black ceiling was created by the soothing smoke of an Irori fireplace from over a few hundred years ago.

Zenagi was started to contribute to the regional revitalization of the Kiso valley. The population and economic decline in the countryside would not stop. "What can we do?" they asked themselves. The answer was Zenagi. They chose to spread Japan’s wonderful landscape and culture to the world by inviting wealth, prosperity and people here, to save their homeland.

See their website for details.
